Circuit judge Joel McCrea visits a town that's under the thumb of feudal landowner John McIntire and his clan. When McCrea learns that McIntire's spoiled son (Kevin McCarthy) has not been arrested for a fatal shooting, he begins searching the hostile town for witnesses.
